GEM Inc. and Capstone Receive International NOVA Award

GEM Inc., of Walbridge, OH, and Capstone Turbine Corporation, of Los Angeles, have received the prestigious 2011 NOVA Award from the Construction Innovation Forum (CIF) for MicroTurbine technology at Syracuse University's green data center – one of the most energy-efficient data centers in the world. GEM Inc.'s subsidiary, BHP Energy, and Capstone received the award for the Hybrid Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS) MicroTurbine system first used at the Syracuse University Green Data Center. The mission-critical new technology improves reliability and reduces energy cost and magnitude. The Capstone Hybrid UPS system anchors a larger integrated power system designed by GEM Inc.

The Capstone Hybrid UPS will be installed next at The University of Toledo. GEM Inc. is designing and building a power system for the University of Toledo's Green Data Center, which shares fundamental attributes of the Syracuse system.

GEM Inc. To Design and Build ‘Green Data Center’ Power System For University of Toledo

GEM Inc., The University of Toledo and the Ohio Third Frontier are partnering to develop a new power system that will drastically reduce power consumption and increase electric reliability at the campus data center.

The University of Toledo project will be the second Green Data Center in the nation and the first in Ohio. The new power system will reduce by 50 percent the amount of fossil fuel needed to power the University’s data center. GEM Inc. will begin construction this fall and will complete the project in late 2012.

Earlier this year, GEM Energy Management was awarded a $1 million hybrid loan by the Ohio Third Frontier to design, implement and commercialize the advanced gas turbine-based power system.

The University of Toledo will use the technologies and packaging techniques that GEM Inc. designed and implemented for the world-class power system at Syracuse University’s Green Data Center in conjunction with IBM in 2010. Capstone Turbine Corporation will provide the Hybrid UPS MicroTurbines previously used by GEM Inc. for the Syracuse University Green Data Center. JATC Wind Turbine

GEM Installs 100kW Wind Turbine at JATC

GEM Inc. has installed a 100-kilowatt wind turbine at the Toledo Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee in Rossford. The 37-meter-high tower and wind turbine will provide a training tool for JATC students, as well as supplemental power for the JATC.

The turbine is already showing energy-saving results. "We just received our first electric bill since the tower and wind turbine were commissioned, and the bill is one-third less than the previous one," said Dave Wellington, JATC Training Director.

The turbine installation is partially grant-funded. The Department of Labor "Ohio Grows" has commissioned WBGU to film a documentary which will be presented to Congress. The JATC is one of only four construction training centers nationwide with IBEW wind turbine certification.

Two JATC graduates, now employed by GEM Inc., of Walbridge, Ohio, installed the wind turbine and performed electrical work.

GEM Receives Two Zero Injury Safety Awards

The National Maintenance Agreement Policy Committee Gave the Awards For:

Owens-Illinois Levis Park, Perrysburg, Ohio — 74,368 man-hours with zero recordable injuries.
BP/Husky Refinery, Oregon, Ohio — 115,113 man-hours with zero recordable injuries.
